Sustainable Design and Styling

EMMY AWARD WINNING COSTUME DESIGN & STYLING

Costume design and styling have a similar evolving process. The major difference is scripted characters needs vs. real-life needs.  The  process of costume design begins with hundreds of hours of character research. Once research is locked in, mood boards are created to present to the studio. These boards solidify that everyone is on the same page for both look and direction. Depending on character needs, wardrobe costumes are then built, rented and/or shopped. For episodic productions, outfits are pulled from these seasonal created closets. These pieces may be repeated throughout the series. For film productions the conceptualized character costumes are generally for one time use in that production. At the end of a film or series, character wardrobe is sent to rental houses or resale shops that work with the studios. It’s circular fashion.

The arc of my career to date has allowed me to create thousands of contemporary looks and styles, period/ fantasy costumes and countless weddings. These opportunities have blessed me with an Emmy  for NBC’s Providence and a nomination for The Mandalorian. In addition a Saturn nomination and Best Costume Design Television Comic book Award -both for Marvel’s Agent Carter as well an OFTA Best Costume Design for a non-series  for Frank Darabont’s Mob City.

CIRCULAR FASHION FOR A SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE

Sustainability is a lifestyle - not just  a piece of clothing. Understanding that buying less is just as important as the actual fashion choices made. With todays busy lifestyles most people need a guiding hand to create that great style and make smart choices. Luxury is very much a part of this. That’s where I come in.

A daily infusion of researching for work, has made me exceedingly aware of the companies with insincere sustainable claims. Knowledge is power and I’m very committed to be a part of the solution.

My background of conceptualizing seasonal looks for shows, is a very similar process to styling looks for private clients. When consulting clients the collective goal is to create a transcending wardrobe that compliments a sustainable lifestyle.

It’s a wonderful cleansing process to remove closet pieces that no longer reflect who and what the client’s direction and path is. The next step is sourcing fashion pieces to galvanize those remaining closet favorites.

Sometimes simple alterations and repairs can bring life back beautiful pieces.  Occasionally there is a need for an entire closet makeover, especially with lifestyle and career changes.

For some clients couture design is the best choice for sustainability. This would include personalized  sketches, fabric samples and fittings .

Whichever method the client chooses, mood boards will be created to discuss best direction for the seasonal closet. Most of time I will start with circular fashion then move forward from there.
